The United States wanted to approve Turkey's purchase of American F-16 fighter jets to strengthen NATO in the Black Sea. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

According to media reports, the United States may approve Turkey's request and provide Ankara with 40 Block 70 F-16 fighter jets and 80 Block 70 upgrade kits. The reason for the approval is to equip its NATO allies against the increasing threat on the Black Sea.

In October, it became known that Washington decided to exclude Ankara from the project to create F-35 fighter jets after Moscow signed a contract for the supply of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to Ankara in 2017. The decision of the Turkish side caused a sharply negative reaction from all NATO countries, including the United States.
